Industries in the UAE and Dubai

The UAE is known for its diversity in industries and in its safe environment, leading technology and capital intensive industries manufacturing high value products.

Oil, Chemical, plastic, crude metal, metal products, textile, leather, foodstuffs, tobacco, printing and publishing are thriving industries. The free zones have attracted a large number of foreign companies to set up manufacturing and service units in the UAE.

Oil and Gas

The United Arab Emirates ranks third with total proven oil reserves of 98.1 billion barrels and represents around 9.5% of the world’s oil reserves. Natural gas reserves are estimated at 5.8 trillion cubic meters and are the third largest gas reserves in the Middle East. UAE has witnessed tremendous growth and development since 1962. Oil revenues are, to a large extent, responsible for the superb transformation of the country and the prosperity it enjoys. A considerable amount of investment is being allocated to the energy sector to improve production, especially of gas, and to develop other related industries.

Abu Dhabi, by far, is the largest oil producer in the UAE and controls more than 85% of the total oil production of the country. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company – ADNOC - is a fully owned government company, controlled and supervised by the Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC). The Supreme Petroleum Council is responsible for formulating the UAE’s policy and overseeing its oil and gas operations and related industries.

Dubai's major oilfields offshore are Fateh, Southwest Fateh, Falah and Rashid. The Margham Field is the only onshore deposit. The Dubai Petroleum Company (DPC) is the main operator. Dubai’s oil reserves have fallen over the past 10 years and are expected to be depleted within 20 years. The state owned Dubai Natural Gas Company – DUGAS is responsible for processing natural gas produced in Dubai’s offshore oilfields as well as the gas piped from Sharjah.

Sharjah's first shipment of oil took place in June 1974, making it the third emirate to become an oil producer after Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Sharjah’s offshore Mubarak field, produces around 30,000 bpd of condensate and has gas deposits. Other important offshore fields are Saja, Moveyeid and the recently discovered Kahaif fields.

Automotive

The Middle East's first bus manufacturing plant is in Dubai. The boom in the tourism industry and the growth in inter-emirate bus travel increased the demand for luxury coaches. The UAE also boasts of the first tire manufacturing plant in the region. Tire companies are among the most advanced companies in the world.

Aviation

Aircraft servicing and repair is a thriving industry in the UAE providing maintenance services to international companies. Gulf Air and Emirates Airlines are among the successful airlines in the Middle East.

Shipbuilding

The national line of the Gulf states is the United Arab Shipping Company (UABSC). It is among the best carrier of dry cargo in the Middle East and serves shipping needs for the region. Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) is a full-fledged manufacturer of naval craft. It also offers refurbishment, repair and refit services to commercial and navy ships in the GCC countries.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a major industry in the UAE. Dubai Aluminum Company stands alone for 2% of the world's total aluminum production.

Cement

Many cement factories exist in the UAE and are working at a steady pace to provide the construction industry with its cement needs.

Gold

The domestic market demand for gold increased even as the gold price dropped internationally. Prices in the UAE are usually lower than other countries in the GCC because of the large number of manufacturers and intense competition.

Other Industries and Work Opportunities

New ventures in the fields of petrochemicals, chemicals, bituminous coal, glass etc. are being established day after day with many more forthcoming industries and work opportunities.
